Her message?

The Federal government is hiring all across America! In fact, it's the largest employer in the U.S. But the challenge is knowing:

  1. Which agencies are hiring

  3. What the job you want is called
  4. How to apply to this specialized market

Kathryn knows the answers and can tell your listeners where the jobs are and how to land one.

Stan Major, "American Breakfast"
National Radio Network, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Stan Major of the American Breakfast from Orlando, which covers 30 stations and the Internet, asked questions about how many jobs were available in PA (555); FL (135) and what kinds of jobs are out there. Stan said that the only job he would take in government would be a Diplomatic Courier, so he could travel around the world! Kathryn offered to help him write his Knowledge, Skills & Abilities statement for “Ability to plan, coordinate and schedule.”

Stan asked what the largest agencies were that are hiring. Kathryn checked the official government website while on the air and pointed out that in FL` most of the jobs are Department of Defense, for instance, Naval Sea Systems Command was hiring a Program Assistant (Automation). Kathryn noted that the typical “secretary” jobs in government don't always have the job title of secretary. Kathryn said that Department of Defense and Homeland Security Department agencies were the two largest hiring organizations today. They discussed that many people do not realize that someone can work in a Dept. of Defense agency, such as Naval Sea Systems Command, without being in the military, and they can start a federal job without a security clearance. This misconception keeps some people from searching for jobs at Defense agencies.

Kathryn referred to www.usajobs.opm.gov and also www.federaljobsearch.com for finding jobs that were open this morning at 7 am ET. More than 17,300 jobs were posted at that time with the federal government.

Stan popped the CD-ROM from Kathryn's Ten Step book into his Mac while on air - it worked! Samples of resumes were readable and looking great!

John David Martin, "Crossroads", 3rd Interview
WAID - 106.5 FM, Clarksville, MS

Keith Tallent, "Live & Local"
KGNO - 1370 AM, Dodge City, KS

Gil Bratcher, "Gil Bratcher Public Affair"
WYSP - 94.1 FM, Philadelphia, PA

This 25-minute public affairs taped interview covered the number and type of federal jobs available via www.usajobs.opm.gov, which were 18,500 as of that time! In the entire state of Pennsylvania there were 148 job openings with several different agencies. Gil asked what makes a federal application so complex and difficult that a person would need to read a book to apply successfully. Kathryn answered his question with three of her Ten Steps: The resume is different; finding the announcements for the right jobs is challenging; and applying to the various agencies is complex because each agency has a different on-line system. Kathryn also told Gil about the federal resume, which is not the typical one-page summary, but a 3 page resume with more details!

John David Martin, "Crossroads"
WAID - 106.5 FM, Clarksville, MS

Jon and Kathryn discussed jobs in Mississippi, including Clarksdale. The job market is practically non-existent in MS and there are 168 available jobs in MS at the time of this interview. The Veteran’s Administration, USDA, Dept. of Interior are hiring in MS. Where’s the best place to relocate to, if you have to move? Washington, DC, Denver, Atlanta. If the listeners give up and move, those are the best cities to consider for federal jobs.

Michael & Nancy, "The Eye Opener with Michael & Nancy"
WWWI - 1270 AM, Brainerd, MN

Nancy and Kathryn talked for a fast 25 minutes about federal jobs for recent graduates, mid-career and Minnesotans who are in the 6.1% unemployment ranks. Minnesota has 51 jobs open today and 3 excellent Student Internship programs for high school or recent grads. Kathryn discussed how to search for jobs on www.usajobs.opm.gov in order to be most efficient in finding the jobs in the right geographic area. Other topics were: forget the KISS principal! Don’t keep it simple – expand the federal resume so that it is 3 pages and uses as many keywords from the announcement as possible.

Kelli Gorr, "The Midday Show"
WJON - 1240 AM, St. Cloud, MN

There are 51 jobs open in Minnesota today. Kathryn talked about the Park Ranger Position available with the US Army Corps of Engineers that pays up to $32K per year. Kelly asked about the different agencies that are hiring in Minnesota and if the jobs are going to be increased in the near future.

Jeff Johnson, "Morning Stretch"
KMFC - 92.1 FM, Columbia, MO

Jeff asked about current job openings in Missouri – 101 jobs open today! Federal government is intimidating because it seems so big and unfriendly, but Kathryn said that if you consider the agency, instead of the entire government, it’s not so unfriendly. For instance in Missouri, the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Corps, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are hiring. And the good news is that you do NOT have to join the military to work on a military base.

Karl Rene DeRouen & Shane Marquardt, "Coffee Talk"
KEUN, Eunice, LA

Karl and Shane asked about federal jobs that THEY could apply to – if they decided to find a new job! Kathryn told them that there weren’t too many DJ federal positions in Louisiana, but if they wanted to change their career it would be fine! Learning that just reading the job titles is an effective way to understand the federal jobs is most important. Research federal job titles and announcements at www.usajobs.opm.gov.
